Guilty Verdict in Murder of Two-Year-Old Danville Toddler

Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced his office obtained a guilty verdict in its prosecution of a Vermilion County man on trial for the 2022 death of a 2-year-old toddler.

A Vermilion County Circuit Court jury found Dantrail Johnson, 32, of Danville, Illinois, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Cali Sago, 2, also from Danville. Johnson’s next court date is scheduled for March 23.

“While nothing will change the horrific events that ultimately took the life of an innocent toddler, I hope today’s verdict brings some healing to Cali Sago’s family,” Raoul said. “I would like to thank the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office for their continued partnership in protecting residents and holding those who commit violent crimes accountable.”

According to Raoul, Johnson was watching Cali Sago on the evening of Aug. 11, 2022 while Cali’s mother was at work. At approximately 8:38 p.m. that evening, officers from the Danville Police Department and paramedics were dispatched to Cali’s home in the 1200 block of Garden Drive in Danville after receiving a 911 call from Johnson stating that Cali was unresponsive. Cali was immediately taken to a local hospital and was ultimately airlifted to a pediatric unit in Peoria, Illinois, where she passed away on Sept. 11, 2022. The Peoria County Coroner’s Office conducted a postmortem examination of Cali and noted signs of violent abuse, including evidence of brain hemorrhaging, internal organ damage and rib fractures. The coroner’s report listed Cali’s cause of death as blunt force trauma due to physical abuse.

The Attorney General’s office is prosecuting the case with Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline M. Lacy’s office.

“Today’s verdict delivers justice for a child whose life was taken too soon, by unspeakable acts of violence,” Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said. “We are grateful to the jurors and to the witnesses who came forward – especially the young sibling whose courage and strength in testifying were extraordinary – and to the dedicated members of the Danville Police Department whose tireless work made this verdict possible.”

Bureau Chief Michael Falagario and Supervising Attorney Daniel Weiler are prosecuting the case for Raoul’s Criminal Prosecutions and Trials Assistance Bureau, along with Assistant State’s Attorney Thomas O’Connor from the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Important Notice Regarding Vote by Mail Ballots and USPS Postmark Changes

The Vermilion County Clerk’s Office is advising voters of a recent United States Postal Service (USPS) change that may affect the timing of Vote by Mail ballot postmarks. In late 2025, USPS updated its postmark system so that machine postmarks reflect the date mail is processed at a postal facility, not when it is placed in a mailbox. Due to postal network consolidation, mail may experience processing delays, which could result in ballots receiving a postmark later than expected. Vote by Mail remains a safe, secure, and reliable way to vote. Ballots are subject to strict security measures, including signature verification and secure handling. This USPS change does not impact ballot security—only the importance of returning ballots on time. Illinois law requires Vote by Mail ballots to be postmarked by Election Day. To ensure timely postmarking, voters are encouraged to: • Mail ballots well in advance • Visit a USPS post office counter and request a manual postmark • Return ballots in person to the Vermilion County Clerk’s Office o For voter convenience, a member of the Clerk’s staff may retrieve a ballot directly from a voter’s vehicle upon request by calling 217-554-1900 Voters with questions should contact the Vermilion County Clerk’s Office for assistance at 217-554-1900.

HOOPESTON CITY HALL TO BE OPENED AS A WARMING CENTER

The City of Hoopeston announces that a public warming center will be open at City Hall beginning 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, through 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to provide residents a heated place to seek relief during a period of dangerously cold temperatures. The warming center will be located in the city council chambers and will remain open continuously throughout this time. Residents should be advised that the warming center is not staffed in person and has very limited amenities. The space is intended to provide warmth and temporary shelter only. Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly and bring any necessary personal items. The City also reminds residents to follow these cold-weather safety tips: • Dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Hats, gloves, and scarves can significantly reduce heat loss. • Limit time outdoors. If you must be outside, take frequent warming breaks. • Check on neighbors, especially seniors, people with disabilities, and those living alone. • Use space heaters safely, keeping them at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never leaving them unattended. • Protect pipes by allowing faucets to drip and opening cabinet doors to let warm air circulate. • Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have warm, dry shelter. For additional information or questions, residents may contact the City of Hoopeston at City Hall during regular business hours.

Farm Bureau to Host Estate Tax Planning Session

Nothing puts fear into a farm family like an estate tax assessment. With most of the farm’s value tied up in land and equipment, having ready cash to cover estate taxes isn’t always readily available. And as the value of that land and equipment have increased over the past years, many farms with estate plans may find they are out of date.

Vermilion County Farm Bureau is hosting an Estate Tax Planning session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. It will begin at 6:00 pm in the Farm Bureau Auditorium, 1905-C US Route 150, Danville (at Henning Road).

Guests presenters are Maggie Wienke, a Certified Financial Planner with COUNTRY Financial, and Russ Leigh, owner of Russell Leigh & Associates accounting firm. They will discuss various factors that determine the estate value, methods for protecting an estate, and reviewing financial and tax implications associated with estate planning.

Currently, the estate tax limit in Illinois is $4 million, with the tax computed on the entire value of the estate if you exceed that threshold. Illinois Farm Bureau has worked to pass the Family Farm Preservation Act the last two years, which would raise the estate tax exemption to $6 million, and have it be a true threshold, with only the amount over the limit being taxed. While it was not part of the final budget plan the last two years, it received a lot of support, and will be pursued again this year.

All Vermilion County Farm Bureau members are welcome to attend.

Jamie Bakken was named the new vice chairman of the Iroquois County

Jamie Bakken was named the new vice chairman of the Iroquois County Board Jan. 13.

The seat was left after Scott Watts passed away unexpectedly in December.

“I am very honored to be elected vice chairman of the Iroquois County Board,” Bakken said via phone. “I am extremely thankful for the encouragement from Chairman Paul Ducat to embrace this opportunity, and the full support of the board means a great deal to me.”

“I want to acknowledge the legacy of former Vice Chairman Scott Watts, who passed away unexpectantly and previously held the position. I have very big shoes to fill. Scott Watts was an amazing leader and a role model to many. I truly loved working with him, and we shared many of the same values and beliefs. I had so much more to learn from him, and his leadership will be deeply missed.”

“One of my top priorities will be working closely with Chairman (Paul) Ducat on reorganizing board committees. “With Scott’s passing, there are committees that need leadership, and now more than ever it’s important that we utilize the strengths of all board members.”

“In addition to committee restructuring, the board will continue to focus on several key issues, including rural transportation and renewable energy matters such as wind, solar, and battery projects.

Bakken was seated to a four-year term on Dec. 1, 2024. Her current roles include chairman of the Management Committee, vice chairman of the Zoning and Planning Committee, and an active member of the Highway Committee and the Tri-County (Livingston, Ford, & Iroquois) Rural Transportation Committee.

“I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Iroquois County and working collaboratively with my fellow board members to address the challenges and opportunities ahead,” she said.

Felon Found Guilty of Aggravated Battery to Bailiff Inside the Vermilion County Courthouse

On January 7, 2026, a Vermilion County jury found Lawrence Hancock (DOB: 10/05/1989), of Danville, Illinois, guilty of Aggravated Battery – State Employee, a class 3 felony, and Aggravated Battery – Public Way, a class 3 felony. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Layne Roberts and Kevin Schneider. The trial was presided over by Judge Karen E. Wall. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 3, 2026.

The People presented evidence that on February 15, 2023, Lawrence Hancock was asked to follow a rule of the Court and remove his head covering before entering courtroom 1A of the Vermilion County Courthouse. When Hancock refused to remove his head covering, a deputy with the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department responded to the courtroom and Hancock was directed to wait outside the courtroom until his case was called. The bailiff then called Hancock back into the courtroom, and as he entered, he shoved the bailiff into the doorway, injuring the bailiff’s hand and causing it to bleed. The deputy responded again and Hancock was subsequently placed under arrest for the battery. The defendant stated to law enforcement that he could not be arrested because he was “just trying to push past the bailiff.”

State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy thanked the members of the jury for their careful attention and service. She also thanked the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department and Court personnel for their swift response and professionalism in protecting everyone in the courtroom. She added, “This defendant’s actions endangered a public servant simply doing their job. The guilty verdict sends a clear message that violence in our courthouse will not be allowed, and supports our commitment to safety, accountability, and the rule of law.”

CRIS Health Aging remains open and continues to serve area population

Danville, Ill. – While the local non-profit landscape continues to evolve, CRIS Healthy Aging doors remain open and our staff will continue to support the health and wellbeing of older adults and individuals, ages 18 to 59 with disabilities.

In 2022, CRIS Healthy Aging joined the Carle Health system, aligning their shared mission to support the health of Vermilion County and Champaign County. This structural change ended the non-profit’s affiliation with CRIS Rural Mass Transit, which has functioned as a separate entity ever since.

CRIS Healthy Aging is positioned to continue to serve the essential needs of aging community members, as we have for decades. Our services support technology education, health literacy sessions, caregiver advisory programming, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support, elder abuse support, nutrition services, as well as social and meal services.

Our goal remains clear: to work to keep older adults safe, healthy, and independent in their own homes for as long as possible, and to support individuals 18 to 59 with disabilities. Visit CRISHealthyAging.org for more information.

CRIS Rural Mass Transit District will be no more

CRIS Rural Mass Transit District will be no more.

The mass transit agency based in Danville is no longer able to provide rides in Vermilion, Ford and Iroquois Counties because the agency itself is dissolving.

District representative Carol Timms cited a freezing of funding from IDOT as the reasoning.

“For those who have paid in advance for rides, we will provide reimbursements,” Timms said. “We want our constituents to please be advised that future rides will be cancelled. We are very sorry for this inconvenience and wish our riders well.”

Alternative transportation services are listed on the CRIS RMTD website to accommodate customers.

People have also expressed concerns regarding other programs offered with the CRIS branding. It should be noted that CRIS Rural Mass Transit and CRIS Healthy Aging are two completely separate entities.
