Senator Rose's Statement Following Local DUI Tragedy Involving an Illegal Alien

State Senator Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) released the following statement after a tragic DUI crash involving an illegal immigrant took the lives of a Coles County Board member and his wife:

“It has now been confirmed that the Clark County Sheriff has received an ICE detention order for the suspect in the horrific DUI accident that killed Coles County Board member Mike Clayton and his wife, Gail, and also horribly injured two others Friday night.

"Worse yet, under Illinois’s idiotic laws that protect illegals and criminals over citizens – laws that Governor Pritzker refuses to fix – the Clark County Sheriff is not even allowed to enforce the ICE order to detain the suspect, Edwin O. Pacheco-Meza. It is also totally ridiculous that the Illinois State Police have apparently been ordered not to release the citizenship status of the suspect – hiding the basic details of this tragedy from the public at large.

"The Claytons are, at least, the 5th and 6th DUI related death in east central Illinois by an illegal in as many years. How many more have to die before Governor Pritzker stops worrying about being President and starts standing up for the actual citizens of Illinois?”

Jury Finds Felon Guilty of Illegally Possessing a Firearm in a Danville Bar

On October 23, 2025, a Vermilion County jury found William Coleman (DOB: 11/4/1982), formerly of Danville, Illinois, guilty of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, a class 3 felony, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No FOID, a class 4 felony, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon – No Conceal Carry License, a class 4 felony. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Jake Klein and Daniel Reynolds. The trial was presided over by Judge Mark S. Goodwin. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 18, 2025. The People presented evidence that on January 29, 2023, at a bar on North Vermilion Street, Danville Police responded in reference to a handgun that had been found inside the women’s restroom. Security footage identified William Coleman walking into the women’s restroom. Following a thorough investigation by Danville Police Department and lab testing by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, results confirmed William Coleman’s DNA on the trigger of the firearm. The People also presented to the Jury that additional charges were filed against William Coleman in case number 2025-CF-746, for Communication with a Witness, a class 3 felony. The witness testified that on September 15, 2025, William Coleman grabbed her by the arm at the same bar on North Vermilion Street, and talked to her about his pending case where she is a witness. The witness testified that Coleman told her to “plead the fifth” and to say she was drunk. Officers collected security footage that confirmed the witness statements. This case is pending and a Status Hearing is scheduled for December 18, 2025. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy and Assistant State’s Attorneys Jake Klein and Daniel Reynolds thanked the witness for coming forward to initially report the gun, and for bravely continuing to cooperate following the additional report of Communication with a Witness. They also thanked the Danville Police Department for their investigation. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said, “We thank the members of the jury for their time, careful attention to the evidence and for their service to our community.” THE PUBLIC IS REMINDED THAT CRIMINAL DEFENDANTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT IS ABLE TO PROVE ITS CHARGES IN COURT BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.

GRAIN SILO COLLAPSE IN MARTINTON, IL

No injuries reported as concrete grain silo collapsed Wednesday afternoon in the small Iroquois County, Illinois community of Martinton.

An unrelated 10:30 a.m. request for an ambulance at the Donovan Farmers Co-Op Elevator on the east side of the Martinton fire district, brought first responders within eyesight of the silos at the facility. During that incident, one of the ambulance personnel happened to look in the direction of the fated silo, constructed in 1972 and filled with 30,000 bushels of harvested soybeans. With that glance he noticed a bulge of concrete and rebar beginning to form on the north side of the silo. Recognizing the potential for a significant life safety situation he notified the Martinton Fire Chief, Jeff Meyer. At approximately 11:15 a.m. Chief Meyer requested fire personnel from Martinton as well as the adjacent communities of Papineau and Watseka to the elevator. These fire crews were tasked with identifying and evacuating employees from the immediate vicinity of the silo and establishing a protected potential collapse zone. An accurate count of facility workers was obtained and the removal of the grain from within the structure began. At approximately 12:45 p.m. a shift with the grain contained in the silo was noted and an evacuation of the immediate area was ordered. Within minutes of that order- at approximately 12:52 p.m., the silo started to crumble and collapse. As it fell, it landed on the main structure of power lines and poles that fed the entire village. Following the collapse Chief Meyer requested additional assistance from Ashkum Fire and a standby ambulance from Riverside.

“Thanks to the observant eye of the ambulance personnel at the original call we were able to evacuate and secure the area around the silo.” Martinton Fire Chief Jeff Meyer said, “This action certainly prevented what may have been life threatening injuries or even fatalities. I am extremely grateful to the ambulance crew for bringing this situation to my attention. Throughout the incident no injuries were reported.”

As of 9:00 p.m. Wednesday the streets and area around the elevator remain closed as crews work throughout the night to clean up the spilled grain and debris. Ameren continues to get the poles and lines reconstructed, allowing electric to be restored to the community. Power officials are still uncertain about the time required but estimates of between 3:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Thursday are being mentioned.

This release from Iroquois County EMA was compiled with information received from Chief Meyer and is being distributed to the media with EMA acting as a public information officer
