Hoopeston Police Report 9/30/2024

Aggravated Domestic Battery H24-5437 2024-8066

Arrested: David Gonzalez (M) (50) of Hoopeston

Details: HPD was called to the above address for a complaint of Domestic Battery. After investigation, officers arrested Mr. Gonzalez on the above charges. He was brought to

HPD for processing, then later transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment.

Location: 400 Blk of S. 2nd Ave.

Arrested: Jalin Hulett (M) (21) of Hoopeston

Details: HPD officers located Mr. Hulett. A computer search revealed that he had an outstanding Vigo County warrant. He was arrested, brought to HPD for processing and then later transported to the PSB in Danville in lieu of bond.

Details: HPD officers conducted a traffic stop and a computer search showed Ms. Pruitt’s vehicle

to have expired registration. Ms. Pruitt was issued a citation and given a Notice to Appear

at the Vermilion County Courthouse then was released from the scene.

Details: HPD officers checked out with Mr. Cox while on patrol. A computer check revealed that he

had an outstanding Vermilion County warrant. He was arrested and taken to HPD to be

processed. He was later transported to the PSB in Danville in lieu of bond.

Details: Driven of Unit #1 was travelling eastbound on Main St and struck Unit #2 who was traveling

southbound on Market. Arrow ambulance responded and transported passenger of

Unit #2. Driver of Unit #1 was cited for Failure to Yield – Stop of Yield Intersection and

was given a traffic court date.

Arrested: Brandon Arms

Details: HPD was dispatched to a vehicle sitting in the roadway unable to run. Upon arrival and

investigation alcohol was located in the vehicle. Mr. Arms was arrested then brought to HPD for processing and was cited then released with a Notice to Appear for Vermilion County Court.

Details: HPD officers stopped the vehicle Mr. Cordes was driving for a traffic violation. A computer

check revealed subject had a suspended driver’s license. Subject left the scene and after

a brief chase, he stopped again and was arrested. He was taken to HPD to be processed

and later transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment.

Details: HPD located the above subject with an active warrant through Vermilion County. Mr. Hutton was taken into custody and transported to HPD for processing. He was later transported by a VC deputy to the PSB to await arraignment.

An investigation found Ms. Bane to be the suspect. While HPD officers were with Ms. Bane, a computer search revealed that she was wanted on a warrant as well. Cissna Park student dies after motorcycle accident

A Senior at Cissna Park died after an accident Saturday afternoon.

Illinois State Police says, Colson Carley was driving north on Illinois Route 1 south of Iroquois County Road 1330 North just after 4:30 p.m.

Troopers say, Carley crossed into the ditch on the east side of the road and hit a culvert and flew off the bike. 

Carley was taken to a nearby hospital and died. 

Cissna Park High School will hold a vigil/remembrance Sunday night at 6 p.m. in front of the high school. 

High school officials announced a crisis team will be available Monday with counselor workers, social workers and pastors for any students and staff who want to speak to anyone.

Eastern Illinois Foodbank Announces

 Eastern Illinois Foodbank (EIF) is distributing food to area families facing food insecurity. The Foodmobile will travel throughout southern Vermilion County on 10/22/2024 and northern Vermilion County on 10/28/2024, with distribution sites and times and for each town listed at https://www.eifoodbank.org/help/mobile.html. The distribution is part of the Foodbank’s Foodmobile Program, a system of mobile food pantries designed to help bring nutritious food to rural or underserved areas. Those planning to attend should pre-register at www.EIFclient.com, although doing so does not guarantee a place in line. Upon investigation officers found Mr. Massey to be in violation of the above. Mr. Massey was taken to HPD, cited and processed, then released with a Notice to Appear in Vermilion County Court.

 

Possession of Methamphetamine w/ Intent to Deliver H24-5234 2024-7776 Time: 8:48 p.m. Location: 900 Blk of S. Dixie Hwy. Arrested: Cherrica Hamby Details: HPD was conducting a traffic stop at the above address. Upon investigation, Ms. Hamby was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. She was arrested and taken to HPD for processing then later transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF OCCUPANT RESTRAINT ENFORCEMENT PATROLS

 Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 7 Commander, Captain Brian Dickmann, announces the results of Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) held in Macon and Vermillion Counties on September 17, 2024. These OREPs provided extra patrol coverage for the ISP so officers could focus on saving lives by making sure all vehicle occupants were buckled up. Violations Enforcement Activity Safety Belt Citations 32 Child Restraint Citations 2 Total Citations 47 Total Written Warnings 15 Most motorists know safety belts save lives, but some ignore their safety and that of their families by neglecting to use safety belts and child restraint devices. These patrols reinforce the occupant protection message by focusing on those who ignore the law. Lives can be saved if people simply “buckle up!” This project was funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation

Armed, Drug-Trafficking Felon Sentenced to Prison

On September 11, 2024, Andrew Sanchez (DOB 11/7/1989), formerly of Danville, Illinois, was sentenced by Judge Mark Goodwin to the Illinois Department of Corrections for Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Deliver for 7 years, and for Unlawful Possession of Weapon by Felon for 5 years. Sentences will be served concurrently and will be followed by 6 months of mandatory supervised release. The People presented evidence to the Court that on December 30, 2020, a search warrant was conducted by Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group agents on the residence of Andrew Sanchez. As officers were arriving to execute the search warrant, Sanchez was observed driving away from the residence. Once inside the residence, special agents with the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group located a safe that contained 806.4 grams of cannabis, United States Currency, firearms, firearm ammunition, an empty gun case, a bulletproof vest and drug paraphernalia, as well as a receipt for the safe being purchased by Andrew Sanchez. Jacqueline Lacy said, “As State’s Attorney, I appreciate the vital work of the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group in their fight to keep our neighborhoods safe from illicit drugs. My office will continue to work closely with Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group to keep our community safe.”

Drug Dealer Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison

On September 13, 2024, Terrence Potts (DOB 8/18/1975), formerly of Georgetown, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Delivery of Controlled Substance, a class 1 felony, and was sentenced by Judge Mark S. Goodwin to 7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. During the plea hearing, the People presented evidence to the Court that on November 22, 2022, a special agent with the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group executed a search warrant on a guest room at the Budget Motel in Georgetown, Illinois. The special agent found Terrence Potts inside the room and located 15.4 grams of a substance that field tested positive for cocaine. Potts was interviewed by special agents and confirmed that the substance was crack cocaine. During the interview, Potts stated that he had been residing in the room at the Budget Motel for 2 years and admitted that he had been selling crack cocaine while residing there. Testing completed by scientists at the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Laboratory confirmed the substance was positive for cocaine. State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy announced the plea and sentence. She thanked the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group for their diligence investigating drug trafficking in our communities.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ARRESTS PAXTON MAN FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL

Illinois State Police (ISP) announces the arrest of 37-year-old Brett M. Sorensen of Paxton, Illinois for Dissemination of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

 

After the receipt of a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the ISP began an investigation regarding the dissemination of child sexual abuse material.  Preliminary facts gathered through the course of the initial investigation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Sorensen. 

 

On September 17, 2024, ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 5 agents arrested Sorensen and executed a residential search warrant in Paxton, Illinois. Sorensen is being held pending an arraignment hearing in Ford County, Illinois. 

 

This ongoing investigation is a collaborative effort between the Illinois Attorney General’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Ford County Sheriff’s Office, the Paxton Police Department, the Ford County State’s Attorney’s Office, and ISP.

Retail Theft H24-5175 2024-7709 Date and Time Occurred: 09/11/2024 6:16 p.m. Location: CVS-805 S. Dixie Hwy. Date and Time of Arrest: 09/17/2024 2:15 a.m. Location: W. Main St./S. 2nd Ave. Arrested: Kevin Lambert (M) (37) of Hoopeston Details: After an investigation, HPD officers located Mr. Lambert and arrested him for Retail Theft. He was taken to HPD to be processed and later transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment.

 

Restraint of Dogs by Owner or Keeper H24-5195 (Citation #10226) Time: 3:19 p.m. Location: S. 3rd Ave./W. Lincoln St. Arrested: Roger Catron (M) (66) of Hoopeston Details: HPD was flagged down by a complainant advising the dog would not allow her to get away. Upon investigation Mr. Catron was found to be the dog’s owner and was cited on the above charge. He was issued a citation and a Notice to Appear in Hoopeston Municipal Court.

 

Wanted on Warrant – Vermilion County H24-5201 2024-7732 Time: 7:05 p.m. Location: 300 Blk of W. Maple St. Arrested: Roger Catron (M) (66) of Hoopeston Details: While HPD officers were out with Mr. Catron for a prior incident, officers were aware the Mr. Catron was wanted on a warrant. Mr. Catron was arrested and processed at HPD then was later transported to the PSB in Danville by Vermilion County.

Details: HPD officers located Mr. Asbury with an active warrant through Iroquois County. Mr. Asbury was brought to HPD for processing and was later transported by an Iroquois County Deputy to await arraignment.

Hoopeston Police Report 9/13/2024

Traffic Accident H24-5105 Time: 3:23PM Location: 500 Blk of E. Chestnut St. Unit 1: 2003 Ford driven by Fredric Acker ()(M) of Hoopeston Unit 2: 2013 Buick driven by Katerine Lopez ()(F) of Hoopeston Details: Unit 1 was reversing out of a driveway in the 700 blk of S. 4th St going southbound. It should be noted that the driveway is located in the 500 blk of E. Chestnut St. While reversing, Unit 1 did not notice Unit 2 driving eastbound on E. Chestnut St. Unit 1 struck Unit 2 on the roadway. Unit 1 accepted fault for the accident. No medical treatment was needed, and no citations were issued. 

T-Mobile Grant of $40,667 grant will go toward completing the Lorraine Theatre restoration project

 T-Mobile announces Hoopeston as one of its latest 25 Hometown Grant recipients. The $40,667 grant will go toward completing the Lorraine Theatre restoration project by purchasing the last of equipment needed to bring back "First Run" movie screenings, providing a variety of affordable entertainment to a community that couldn't experience otherwise. 

The project was submitted by Save the Lorainne Foundation, an organization aimed to preserve and renovate the over 100-year-old historic theatre. 

“The Lorraine Foundation was formed by a group of citizens simply wanting to preserve our local landmark, the Lorraine Theatre,” said Alex Houmes, President of the Lorraine Foundation. “After 12+ years of fundraising and renovations, this gift from T-Mobile’s Hometown Grant allows us to cross the finished line. The much anticipate return of "First Run" movie screenings will be an experience worthy of the Lorraine’s reputation for sound and picture quality. Mixing its historic atmosphere and today’s latest technology, the Lorraine Theatre will once again be The Best Place for Movies.”  

Through Hometown Grants, people in communities nationwide are kickstarting projects that make a real difference and help their towns thrive. Since launching its five-year commitment?to small towns in April 2021, T-Mobile has awarded a whopping 325 communities across 47 states and over $14 million in funding.? 

The impact doesn’t stop there. To date, Hometown Grants has created more than 86,000 volunteer hours and provided more than $3 million in funding toward small business projects like revitalizing farmers markets, launching business incubators and improving main streets.?To date, Hometown Grants has provided over $500,000 in funding to 13 towns across Illinois. 

Armed Drug Dealer Pleads Guilty, Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison

On September 6, 2024, Caleb Hackler (DOB 3/9/1986), formerly of Arcola, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Possession of Weapon by Felon – Forcible Felony, a class 2 felony. Judge Mark Goodwin sentenced Hackler to 11 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Following his term of imprisonment, Hackler will serve 1 year of mandatory supervised release. During the plea hearing, the People presented evidence that on August 13, 2021, deputies with the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department observed a vehicle travelling at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Deputies tried to catch up to the vehicle, but were unable to do so and the vehicle eventually wrecked into a ditch. Upon approaching the wrecked vehicle, deputies saw the two occupants flee on foot. Deputies searched the area for the occupants, who were eventually located and identified as Caleb Hackler and his co-defendant, Brett Magana. Deputies conducted a search of the wrecked vehicle with the assistance of Illinois State Police. Agents with the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group also assisted in the investigation. During the search of the vehicle, law enforcement recovered two 9mm firearms, firearm magazines, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia, as well as two wallets containing the identification cards of both Caleb Hackler and Brett Magana. During his interview with police, Magana admitted he was the driver of the vehicle, that he was aware of the guns and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, and that he and Hackler were on their way to make a drug transaction in the area. Hackler is a convicted felon. Magana was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on January 13, 2022. “Repeat offenders who refuse to follow the law will be held accountable by my office,” said Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy. She added, “Our community is safer thanks to the combined efforts of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department, the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group and the Illinois State Police.”

Arrested: Camden Smithers

Details: HPD officers responded to a call from a complainant advising an occupant of a vehicle had spit on him and his vehicle. Upon investigation Mr. Smithers was arrested and taken to HPD to be processed. He was later released and issued a Notice to Appear in Vermilion County court.

Newton County sheriff's deputy shot in the line of duty will not survive injuries

The Newton County sheriff's deputy who was critically injured after being shot in the line of duty will not survive his injuries. 

"Despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed Corporal Brandon Schreiber will not survive his injuries," Sheriff Cothran said in an update. 

Corporal Schreiber is an organ donor and his sacrifice will present the opportunity for him to help many other people.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office said further details will be provided later this week. 

We appreciate the outpour of support from the community as well as our law enforcement families.

Details: Unit 1 was hauling material on a trailer. An object fell into the roadway in front of

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF OCCUPANT RESTRAINT ENFORCEMENT PATROLS

 Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 7 Commander, Captain Brian Dickmann, announces the results of Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) held in Macon and Vermillion Counties on September 03, 2024. These OREPs provided extra patrol coverage for the ISP so officers could focus on saving lives by making sure all vehicle occupants were buckled up. Violations Enforcement Activity Safety Belt Citations 32 Child Restraint Citations 0 Total Citations 46 Total Written Warnings 0 Most motorists know safety belts save lives, but some ignore their safety and that of their families by neglecting to use safety belts and child restraint devices. These patrols reinforce the occupant protection message by focusing on those who ignore the law. Lives can be saved if people simply “buckle up!” This project was funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation

Subject was located at City Hall and he was arrested. He was later transported to the PSB to await arraignment. 

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE INVESTIGATES SHOOTING OF OFFICER AND SUSPECT IN SHELDON

 On September 1, 2024 at approximately 8:45 p.m., the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department requested the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 5 to assist in an officer involved shooting investigation. Preliminary reports indicate officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage. The pursuit went into Indiana, at which time the Newton County Sheriff’s Department became engaged in the pursuit. The pursuit came back into Illinois and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. The suspect exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged. During the exchange of gun fire, the suspect and a deputy from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department were struck. The suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, IL, was pronounced deceased on scene. The Newton County Deputy was transported to a regional hospital where he remains in critical condition. No hostage was located inside the vehicle. ISP will lead the investigation into the use of force portion of this incident. After a thorough investigation, ISP will turn over its investigation to the Iroquois County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Details: HPD officers were called to the area for the report of juveniles shooting Orby guns.

Officers located juveniles and they were taken to HPD to be processed. They were

later released to parent/guardians and the report was forwarded to the State Attorney’s

Office for further review.

Details: HPD officers were out with Ms. Paris and a search found a controlled substance on her. She was arrested and brought to HPD for processing and then later transported to Vermilion County to await arraignment.

Newton County Deputy shot in the line of duty

Yesterday evening, September 1st 2024, our department was involved in an incident that concluded in Sheldon, Illinois that has resulted in a Newton County Deputy being critically injured. The Illinois State Police have assumed responsibility for this investigation.

Driving While License Suspended (citation), Operating Uninsured Motor Vehicle (citation), Vermilion County Warrant, Callaway County Missouri Warrant H24-4783 2024-7134 Date: Friday, August 30th (Delayed Entry) Time: 11:46 p.m. Location: 400 blk. of S. Dixie Hwy. Arrested: Matthew Williams (M) (28) of Wellington Details: HPD initiated a traffic stop at the above location. While conducting the stop, Mr. Williams was ticketed for the above citations and given an NTA for Vermilion County Traffic Court. During the traffic stop, a computer check revealed a Vermilion County Warrant and a Callaway County Missouri Warrant. Mr. Williams was taken into custody, processed, and then transported to the PSB in Danville to await arraignment and extradition.

Washington St./S. 8th Ave. Arrested: Jason Kinnaird (M) (47) of Hoopeston Details: HPD located Mr. Kinnaird and a computer check revealed a warrant.
