Carolyn S. Gress, 90, of Hoopeston

 

Carolyn S. Gress, 90, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 11:50 A.M. Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston, IL. She was born September 4, 1934, in Hoopeston, the daughter of LeRoy and Felmer (Warf) Miller. She married Donald “Butch” Gress, Sr. at the Catholic Church parsonage in Hoopeston, IL. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1988.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Linda Evans; one granddaughter, Lori Dawn Gress; and one step-granddaughter, Amanda Landers.

She is survived by her four children, Tony (Loni) Gress of Hoopeston, IL, Dennis Gress of Naples, FL, Robin (Chad) Thomas of Hoopeston, IL, and Greg (Sandy) Gress of Charleston, SC; one brother, Rick (Peggy) Miller of Danville, IL; sister-in-law, Madge (Dan) Silver of Hoopeston, IL; two brothers-in-law, Bob Evans of Milford, IL and Tom (Elnora) Gress of Hoopeston, IL; seven grandchildren, Mike Gress, Jason Gress, Aaron Gress, Eric Gress, Jessica Gress, Dylan (Kim) Gress, and Devan Thomas; four great-grandchildren, Brently Gress, Conner Hamilton, Ella Gress, and Jillian Gress; five step-grandchildren, Andi Garman, Ashlee (Scott) Polen, Scott (AnnaLu) Wilson, Randy Wilson, and Chris Wilson; six step-great-grandchildren, Zach Garman, Chas Landers, Blaine Landers, Baylea Hasbargen, Rori Wilson, and Reece Wilson; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two special friends, Ellen Lettman of Naples, FL and Sue Comstock of Hoopeston, IL.

Carolyn worked at Gulbransen, which later became CBS for 13 years as an inspector. She also worked for Payless Tours for over 20 years as a hostess on the bus which she loved and made many friends. Throughout those 20 years she traveled to many places including New York City where she saw her first Broadway show, The Empire State Building, 911 Memorial, Times Square, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and Ground zero. She was also able to travel to Washington D.C. where she saw the White House, the Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and Arlington Cemetery where they got to see the soldier's routine at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Carolyn and her husband’s greatest joy was being with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They loved when their out of state families would come and have family get togethers. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling to Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas as they loved sightseeing, watching the shows, and a little gambling. Carolyn enjoyed playing Bingo, sewing, and needle point. She was an avid Illini fan and Chicago Cubs fan and got to attend her first Cubs game with her children at the age of 85. They even got to go out on the field while the teams were practicing. She loved Classic Country music and was a lifetime member of the Bootkickers.

A visitation will be held 10:30 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Saturday June 7, 2025, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 12:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home with Larry Baughn officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.

Larry Carl Kaufman, 81, of Hoopeston, IL, formerly of rural Rankin

Larry Carl Kaufman, 81, of Hoopeston, IL, formerly of rural Rankin, IL, passed away at 3:58 P.M. Monday May 26, 2025, at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston. He was born January 25, 1944, in Watseka, IL, the son of Carl A. and Barbara (Bowlby) Kaufman. He married Sandra Bolin on June 5, 1965, at the Rankin United Methodist Church. She survives in Hoopeston.

He is also survived by one daughter, Jennifer (Rick) Young of Cropsey, IL; two sons, Michael (Shelley) Kaufman of Noblesville, IN and Eric Kaufman of Hoopeston, IL; one sister, Carol (Andy) Robison of Champaign, IL; one brother, Wayne Kaufman of Rankin, IL; two grandsons, Lucas Karl Schultz and Mitchel Robert Schultz; one niece, Sheri Kaufman; one great-niece, Shayla (Jason) Burton; two great-great-nieces, Braelyn and Acelyn Burton; and one great-great-nephew, Corbin Burton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Larry was a lifelong farmer. He was also a bulk milk hauler for 43 years and helped at Fountain Creek Township. He was a member of the Christian Bible Church where he served as a Deacon. Larry enjoyed reading his Bible, visiting with friends new and old, and tinkering around the farm. He is at home with his Lord and Savior where he has looked forward to being his whole Christian life.

A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Christian Bible Church, 1200 E. 200 North Road, Cissna Park, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 12:00 P.M. Friday at the church with Bruce Ristow officiating. Burial will follow in Cissna Park Cemetery.

Betty Barron, 67 of Hoopeston, IL

Betty Marie Barron, 67, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 8:36 A.M. Monday, May 26, 2025, at her home. She was born November 15, 1957, in Danville, IL, the daughter of James and Maxine (Tippy) Hyde. They preceded her in death at a young age, and she was later raised by her sister, Barb “Pee Wee” (Frank) Irvin.

Betty married Val D. Barron on May 10, 2014, at the Cheneyville church. He survives in Hoopeston.

She is also survived by one son, Derek Hyde (Shelly Hackman) of Danville, Il; two grandchildren, Audri (Ben) Blake and Alyssa Hyde; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Blake; and nieces and nephews, Jason (Chase) Irvin, Ron Irvin, Darrell & Lisa Irvin, Frankie Irvin, and Holly Irvin.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Barb “Pee Wee” and Frank Irvin; and one nephew, Earl Irvin.

Cremation rites will be accorded, and a burial will be held at a later date.

Harold Michael Hathaway, 82

Harold Michael Hathaway was born November 29, 1942, in Danville, IL, at 902 Hartsorn Lane in Fair Oaks Housing Project to Harold R Hathaway and Hazel L. Demoss Hathaway. They preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, John Frankino. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother: Patricia A. Roberts and Nancy L. (Gordon) Bradfield of Oakwood, IL, and Stephen R. Hathaway. On September 3rd, 1967, in Murdock, IL, he married Patricia V. Coslet. She preceded him in death on October 23, 2009. Together, they had two daughters, Carrie C. Hathaway of Danville, IL and Robin L. (Troy) Pasley of Rossville, IL. He is survived by their seven grandchildren, Kaitlin Hathaway, Hunter Howe, and Hannah Howe, all of Rossville, Jordan (Dustin)Morris of Oakwood IL, Blaine Pasley of Westville IL, Zachary Martin of Tilton IL, and Tyler (Madison)Pasley of Catlin IL.  He also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren,

Harold attended Fairchild, McKinley, and Cannon Grade School and Danville High School. He served in the United States Air Force with the Strategic Air Command in the 6th Civil Engine Squadron at Walker Air Force Base in New Mexico from January 25, 1961, to January 25, 1965. After leaving the Air Force, he worked at Tee Pak for 39 years and eight months, from which he retired. After retiring, he spent his free time with his grandchildren. Harold enjoyed listening to old country music and rock and roll. He spent much of his time watching classic horror movies from the 1950s and reading Stephen King books. He had acquired a large collection of King novels throughout his life. He also enjoyed playing solitaire, poker, and Mario games on his Nintendo devices. Harold is remembered for being a wonderful father and grandfather to his family. He always made corny jokes, shared his favorite memories, and told his grandchildren random facts that only he would remember. He ensured that his family was always taken care of. He wanted to tell his surviving family not to be sad about his passing, as he had made peace with dying because he planned to be back with his loving wife, Patricia, in the afterlife. He will be missed dearly by all those around him.

The family would also like to thank the OSF hospice staff that aided Harold through his final journey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Blurton Funeral Home, in Hoopeston, with Pastor Raymie Gordon officiating.  Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.  Burial will follow the service at Bethel Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Hoopeston American Legion.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home to assist them in honoring Harold’s life.  Condolences may be shared with the family on his everlasting memorial page at: www.BlurtonFuneralHomes.com.

Nancy C. Newby, 78, of Anderson, IN, formerly of Fowler, IN

Nancy C. Newby, 78, of Anderson, IN, formerly of Fowler, IN, passed away at 3:57 A.M. Thursday, May 8, 2025. She was born January 30, 1947, in Lafayette, IN, the daughter of Margaret (Molyneux) Gwin. Her mother preceded her in death.

She is survived by one sister, Kay Molyneux and one brother, Carl “Pete” (Ginny) Gwin.

In addition to her mother, Nancy was preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Morris.

Nancy worked at Delco-Remy as a computer programmer until her retirement. She enjoyed doing puzzles and making stained glass and crafts.

Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private burial will be held at Fowler Cemetery in Fowler, IN.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Earline Probasco, 91, of Hoopeston

Earline Mae Probasco, 91, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away at 1:39 P.M. Sunday May 11, 2025, at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Living in Hoopeston. She was born May 5, 1934, in Donansburg, KY, the daughter of John and Elsie (Bishop) Russell.

She is survived by four daughters, Jan Kijowski of Savoy, IL, Rebecca (David) Kempe of Champaign, IL, Nancy (Darrin) Hofer of Loda, IL, and Diane (Carrol) Ray of Rankin, IL; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Rob) Medd, Michael Kempe, Allison Hofer and husband Steven Kiser, Abby Hofer, Alyssa Hofer, and Dalton Goble (Lynzi Armstrong); one great-grandson, Axell Goble; niece, Karen McGinnis; and nephew, Donnie Wells.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elsie Russell; sister, Marie Wells; and nephew, Robert Wells.

Earline worked at CBS in Hoopeston. She then worked at Rankin Grade School as a bus driver and kitchen help. She served as the Village Clerk of Rankin for 17 years and later was a bus driver for Hoopeston CUSD #11 until her retirement. She was a member of the Rankin United Methodist Church. Earline enjoyed doing word searches and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed playing cards, taking drives around town, and visiting with her family at the campground.

A visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 21st, at the funeral home with Pastor Micah Mobley officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.

Barbara Greenberg, 93, of Savoy,

Barbara Dian Greenberg, 93, of Savoy, IL, formerly of Naperville, IL, passed away at 12:20 P.M. Sunday May 11, 2025, at Savoy Place Memory Care in Savoy, IL. She was born on November 28, 1931, in Mattoon, IL, the daughter of Harold G. Severns and Eloise Alice (Herron) Severns. She married Russell J. Greenberg on November 4, 1955, in Mattoon, IL.

She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Anne Howe of Normal, IL (Gary Seguin of Tuscola, IL); her son, Ronald Jay Greenberg of Olney, IL; brother, retired Lt. Col. USAF Bill (Mary) Severns of Hilton Head, SC; sister-in-law, Vera Severns of Mattoon, IL; six grandchildren, Meghan (Vince) Cesareo of Oro Valley, AZ, Joshua (Jenna) Howe of Mahomet, IL, Ryan (Jessica) Howe of Normal, IL, Brook (Felipe) Ciprian of Sebree, KY, Danielle Greenberg of Olney, IL, and Alexis (Mitchell) Rose of Parkersburg, IL; seventeen great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Connor, and Logan Cesareo, Kalli White, Zoey, Quinn, Monroe, and Payton Howe, Kendall and Lochlynn “Ellie” Howe, Braghen and Braysen Sloat, Briella and Finn Ciprian, Lukas Milburn, Layiah Greenberg, and Jasper Hibbs; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her first husband, 1st Lt. Robert M. Crosley, MIA; her second husband, Russell J. Greenberg; her parents; siblings, Patricia A. Jeffries and Robert G. Severns; and daughter-in-law, Jacqueline D. Greenberg.

Barbara was a homemaker, caring for her family. She enjoyed volunteer work serving as a past Girl Scout, Brownie, and Cub Scout Den Leader.

Barb delighted in working in her flower beds and finding new and interesting varieties to add to her collection. She collected rocks that she found on family trips to line her beds. Digging in the earth was both her solace and happy place. She loved bird watching, particularly hummingbirds and in later life, Baltimore Orioles. She planted specific flowers to attract the hummingbirds. Multiple bird feeders were placed outside of her living room picture window to draw birds of all kinds and Barb had bird guides to identify them. Barb enjoyed listening to music, attending live musicals and theatre, watching old movies, traveling, reading, puzzles, and games. She was fondly referred to as “The Card Nazi” in family Sevens From Hell cards game circles. She was passionate and compassionate. Barb was a force of nature sometimes to be reckoned with but would have gladly given the shirt off of her back to anyone in need of it. Above all else, Barb’s family was her most cherished and prized possession. She thrived on time spent with family members and would have attempted to move heaven and earth for any one of them. Barb was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but most notably she was a generous giver.

A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 A.M. Tuesday May 27, 2025, at Anderson Funeral Home, 427 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL. The funeral service will follow the visitation and will begin at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 27th, at the funeral home with Roger Schmidgall officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston.

Marilyn "Kay" Cox, 86, of Cross Planes, Tennessee, formerly of Hoopeston

Marilyn “Kay” Cox, 86, of Cross Planes, Tennessee, formerly of Hoopeston, passed away at 9:16 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Tristar Hendersonville Medical Center, in Hendersonville, TN.

Kay was born on August 23, 1938, the daughter of Charles and Marveline (Simpson) Hushaw. She married Arlo “Bud” Cox on August 3, 1956, in Cheneyville. He preceded her in death on June 20, 2012.

Kay is survived by her special friend- Allen Bogard of Cross Planes, TN; two sons- Deane (Denise) Cox of Mt. Juliet, TN and Brian (Leslie) Cox of Riverside, CA; eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-Phil Cox and two sisters- Edna Rethelford and Beverly Jennings.

Kay graduated from Wellington High School. She previously worked as a medical records secretary in California. She previously attended the Cowboy Church, in Hoopeston. She enjoyed going out to dinner, going to the movies, riding in the car through the mountains and her flowers. Kay loved life and enjoyed being around people.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2025, at Floral Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Gary Milton officiating.  Memorials may be made to the family.  The family has entrusted the Blurton Funeral Home, in Hoopeston, to assist them in honoring Kay’s life.  Condolences may be shared with the family on her everlasting memorial page at: www.BlurtonFuneralHomes.com.
